Role Summary:

As a Forward Deployed Data Engineer, you will be a customer-facing expert focused on integrating and ingesting data from diverse client sources into our platform. This role demands creativity, resilience, and technical prowess to connect to even the most challenging or unconventional data systems, ensuring seamless data flows that power critical legal workflows. You'll work directly with law firms to build robust ingestion pipelines, enabling them to leverage their existing data within Filevine for better insights and efficiency. This position requires extensive travel (up to 75% or more), including frequent onsite visits to client locations across the country.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build custom data ingestion pipelines to connect client data sources—no matter how disparate, legacy, or unconventional—to Filevine.
  • Collaborate with clients to assess their data landscapes, identify ingestion opportunities, and implement secure, reliable ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • Handle a wide variety of data formats and sources (e.g., databases, APIs, flat files, spreadsheets, legacy systems) with a focus on data quality, validation, and transformation.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy and security standards critical to the legal industry (e.g., handling sensitive client information).
  • Troubleshoot and optimize data flows in production environments, resolving issues related to connectivity, volume, or schema mismatches.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to clients on data integration best practices during and after implementation.
  • Document pipelines, mappings, and custom solutions while feeding client insights back to the product and engineering teams for platform improvements.
  • Perform onsite engagements as needed to accelerate integrations and drive adoption.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer, ETL Developer, or in customer-facing integration roles (e.g., solutions engineering or professional services).
  • Strong proficiency in building data pipelines using tools like Python, SQL, Apache Spark, Airflow, or similar.
  • Expertise in connecting to diverse data sources: relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server), NoSQL, APIs (REST/SOAP), file-based systems, and cloud storage.
  • Experience with data transformation, cleansing, and handling unstructured or "messy" data.
  • Knowledge of data security best practices, especially in regulated industries (e.g., encryption, access controls, compliance with HIPAA or similar).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to improvise solutions for non-standard data challenges.
  • Strong communication skills to translate technical details for non-technical stakeholders (e.g., firm administrators and attorneys).
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively to client sites nationwide.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent experience.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience in legal tech, SaaS integrations, or enterprise data migrations.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) for data ingestion and storage.
  • Background in handling high-volume or real-time data streams.
  • Passion for tackling "impossible" data problems in a high-impact, client-driven environment.
